Finding the Holy in Everyday Life
What happens in a spiritual direction session?
A session is typically an hour. When you come into my office you will notice an extra chair and a candle.
I begin each session in one of two ways. I will ask you which way you prefer to begin:
1) with a short reflection reading
2) or a period of silence.
If you choose to sit in silence, I explain that after you are ready to begin, no matter how long you take for the silence, you then simply begin to share and talk. This way of beginning allows both of us to leave the "clutter of the day" behind us. I take utmost care to avoid distractions of all kinds as well as protect your privacy and confidentiality.
As the session ensues, awarenesses may come to the seeker (you). I may ask a question or two in order to assist you in going deeper, drawing out "threads" of the holy and divine. As our time draws to a close, I may share an insight that became evident during the past hour. This time is yours, however, with you deciding what direction to take.
If you want to reschedule at that point or call later for another appointment, that again is entirely up to you. Often folks will give this process several appointments to decide if spiritual direction, as well as my style, is a good fit. This is how a basic session of spiritual direction goes. I hope you will consider it for yourself!
Who uses Spiritual Direction?
All sorts of people come to spiritual direction from all classes of society. It is not limited to the religious sector. Many fall into the category of "spiritual but not religious." Those who come include male, female, gay...anyone. Some who seek spiritual direction are looking for a safe place to discuss their journey of life, whatever that has been. Others want a greater awareness of the divine in their experiences. There are those who want to unpack disturbing religious experiences. A few folks want spiritual direction in order to have someone listen to them as they talk about their values, choices, God or prayer. Others seek out spiritual direction in order to help discern various life decisions. There's really nothing that can't be discussed! If you are interested, come!
What is the difference between Counseling and Spiritual Direction?
Counseling or therapy focuses on a person's behaviors, emotions, and thoughts that impact certain areas of life as well as relationships. A therapist may help you understand your psyche in order to change some behaviors. If you have a crisis or a need for a weekly session, counseling is certainly an option for you.
Spiritual direction can be therapeutic but there are differences. Spiritual Directors are not trained in any goal-oriented way or in a "fixing mode." Spiritual direction usually encourages approximately a once per month model that becomes like a "check-in" especially as you share where you have seen God or the divine in your life. Basically, we are trained to focus on the sacred experiences and spiritual questions and longings in your life.
Do I have to commit to a certain number of sessions?
Not at all; this is your journey and you decide how often you are comfortable coming. You may schedule as few or as many as you wish. To give it a fair evaluation of whether spiritual direction is for you or not, it is recommended to try three sessions or so, but that is entirely up to you.
